Not everything must end today. Pause. Breathe. Begin again. – Ave Mateiu Quote 445

I don’t know who needs to hear this today, but maybe it’s both of us.

We live in a world that celebrates finishing:

  • Finish the project.
  • Finish the deadline.
  • Finish the emails before you leave work.
  • Finish one more product before going to bed.

And, somewhere along the way, many of us started believing that a good day is a day where everything gets checked off.

Over the years, I’ve learned that life doesn’t really work like that.

Some days, there will still be emails waiting tomorrow.

The laundry won’t be folded.

The design won’t feel finished.

And that’s okay.

I’ve noticed that when I’m tired, I stop seeing clearly.

If I’m designing a printable late at night, I can spend 30 minutes trying to fix something that becomes obvious after a good night’s sleep.

Fresh eyes often solve problems that tired eyes can’t.

I think this is true for more than just design.

Maybe it’s true for life, too.

Why We Find It So Hard to Stop

Psychologists have a name for something many of us experience.

It’s called the Zeigarnik Effect.

Simply put: our minds tend to hold on to unfinished tasks.

That’s why an unfinished project can quietly follow us into dinner, a family gathering, or even bed.

We haven’t forgotten it. Our brain simply hasn’t closed the loop.

But here’s something I’ve been learning.

There’s a difference between pausing and abandoning.

Closing your laptop because you’re exhausted isn’t giving up.

It’s recognizing that tomorrow’s version of you deserves a chance to continue with a clearer mind.

Even the Bible Reminds Us to Rest

One of my favorite moments in the Bible is found in 1 Kings 19.

Elijah is exhausted. He’s discouraged. He’s convinced he can’t keep going.

And God doesn’t begin with a lecture.

He begins with care.

An angel brings him food.

Water.

Then Elijah rests.

Only after his strength returns does the journey continue.

I’ve always found this thoughtful and beautiful.

For me, sometimes the next step isn’t more effort.

Sometimes it’s about allowing myself to recover so I can continue well.

Rest Is Not the Same as Giving Up

Not everything needs to be finished today (unless it’s a life and death emergency).

Some work benefits from fresh eyes.
Some conversations benefit from a calmer heart.

And, some decisions benefit from a rested mind.

So, if today has been full, let it be full.

Close the notebook.
Save the document.
Make yourself a cup of tea or coffee.
Spend time with the people you love.

The work will still be there tomorrow.

Believe me, that’s not falling behind.

That’s honoring the person doing the work. You 🫵
